Bunny On Acid - Oxygen (NDV Remix)

Ever so happy to launch this blog into life with a remix made by Nadav Ravid AKA NDV, probably the main source of musical inspiration for me for many many years. Nadav has been broadcasting the only show in mainstream Israeli radio to feature up to date serious electronics and much more. He is also half of the killer duo Polar Pair (together with Malkiel Grossman) who we should be hearing some new (HOT!) stuff coming from soon enough. Besides that, for more than a year now he has been co-heading the Botanika label alongside Amir Egozy, a forward thinking label that’s slowly but steadily releasing quality beats and steps from local producers.

Oxygen is the latest release from the Botanika family, featuring Jerusalem’s own Itzik Finley AKA Bunny On Acid’s second venture with the label. It features two tracks with Bunny On Acid’s quirky dreamy lush synthed post-dubstep, plus the title track as remixed by NDV, who takes Oxygen and steps it up way more than a notch with some 2stepped funky beats. Nadav has really been on top of his game lately, and this remix is no different. Big up!

Listen to and buy the whole EP on the Botanika shop or over at Juno.

Here’s a couple more I’ve been really feeling by NDV lately - Look At The Stars, released a few weeks back on Bonzzaj Records, and the beautiful unreleased Escape From The City Of Joy Pt. 2

Dangerous

Killer tune alert!

Fresh Ninja Tune signee Slugabed uploaded this mean Busta remix to his Soundcloud two days ago, taking a big tune and making it bigger. Free downloads limit on soundcloud was blown away in minutes, but you can still get it here. I’d write some more but I guess there’s just no need to. Just click it.

BUSTARHYMES - DANGEROUS (SLUGABON REMAX) by SLUGABED

This remix goes perfectly with yet another classic you’d think should better be left alone that Slugabed managed to mess around with and come out with the upper hand.

Roots Manuva - Witness (1 Hope) [SLUGABED REMIX] by SLUGABED

And to nicely close this roll here’s yet another hip hop standard, this time by Dead Prez, stepped up into the new decade by my second most favorite Bavarian ever, Swede:art (whose album Emotional Colors was, in my opinion, one of the very best released in 2010).

Side Brain - On The Second Moon Of Earth

Side Brain, aka Juda Baduda (ace name!), a very talented 25y.o. Israeli beatscraft now residing in L.A., beat capital of the world, released his debut album a bit more than a week ago on Bunny On Acid’s Holy Dubs Recordings.

Took my time with posting about this album, since it isn’t as easily digestible, or categorized to be more precise, like most other beat tapes and albums out lately. Side Brain moves freely (sometimes on the same track) from smooth melodies to edgier, dubstep influenced, bass driven beats, covering a lot of ground inbetween. He does however manage to define a sound of his own, showing a lot of musicality and all the while demonstrating top notch production skills.

L.A. should give a warm welcome to this new guy in town, and beatheads round the world digging the sounds of Maverick, Alex B, Devonwho, Elaquent and the likes definitely ought to give this one a spin.

The album is up for free grabs (but you might consider paying if you like it!) over at bandcamp.

Yeuda (that’s his real name) is also quite a music tech freak, enjoying beating in new ways, and you should really also check out his beat making vids on his youtube page, like this one, where he plays around with an arcade-like controller and monome to make a mean live beat.

The Right To Copy

One of the things I most like to find in my inbox is a new beat tape from 100 Akres aka Freshnerd aka Keith Mitchell, and that’s just what happened earlier this evening. One of the most prolific producers I know of, Freshnerd has been releasing these beat tapes on an (almost) one per month steady flow, focusing on a specific artist or album with each tape, flipping the original tracks to produce short (2:30min is a very long one) wicked beats. From July 2010 up to today he managed to release eight of these beauties, from Cyndi Lauper to Janet Jackson via David Bowie, always titled “The (artist’s name) Beat Tape”.

On his latest beat tape “The Blankety Blank Beat Tape” however, the artist’s name is not mentioned, and not by mistake. As Mitchell writes:

“What up folks, you’re probably wondering about that title and the anonymity. Well, I’ve been getting several emails asking if I’ve had permission from the artists to use their samples….I get a funny feeling these emails are from a certain association thats more than likely about to send me a cease and desist (or eight). Anyways, I’m sure the artist of the new beat tape will be able to spot that these samples are from his album (or maybe not). Either way, I’ll keep delivering freshness to your ears regardless of outdated copyright laws.”

I’m not that sure the emails he’s been receiving do indeed imply on some lawyers workin their way to him, since I myself was thinking about sending the Freshnerd a mail with the very same question. Either way, copyright laws truly are outdated and quite senseless, and surely beat tapes like these, offered for free download, and flipped so bad (meaning good) should not be seen as a threat of any sort by the artist sampled (or more precisely, their record label), let a lone as a theft. If anything, the opposite should be the case.

Support free sampling! Everything human is a sample. Every invention is a remix. Every behavior practiced by anyone is a cover version of someone else. Enjoy this free beat tape, see if you can identify the artist flipped here, and grab 100 Akres’ other tapes too, as they are all smashing.

Digging Digi

Though he’s been active since 2004, I only first stumbled upon Italian producer Cristiano Crisci AKA Digi G’Alessio’s music in Grillo’s latest Bubblegum Beats mix on Space Invader Radio. Then today I saw Finest Ego’s post about this EP, and was immediately captivated.

Disco Zambra’s beats are a perfect fit to my tastings. Fresh, crispy beats, with a lot of ounce to the bounce, full of sizzling electronic beeps and bubbling with groove. Apparently Digi G’alessio has released eight albums in the last two years (!) under this name, experimenting with different sounds and styles, but here he seems to focus on a very specific feel, making the album’s sound very coherent, almost as if it was just one long sweet track. It’s all for free, btw, over on Bandcamp.

Very happy to have found this great music today, as it’s also led me to other nice producers also releasing on Overknights recordings, all for free too. I especially enjoyed Free’P’Hop by Low’N’Zac and Manuele Atzeni’s B4TS (Beats For The Sleepwalker). Oh, and while you’re at it, you might also wanna check out Digi’s The Yellow Book album, out on Plynt records (free download, you guessed it).

Turkish Delights

Sis Surpriz EP is out, and there’s nothing surprising about it. dEbruit has done it again. This talented Parisian-now-turned-Londoner beat head was by far one of the freshest producers to release music last year, and I’ve been waiting eagerly for his new EP ever since I’ve heard it’s preview mix (listen below) two months ago, and the wait is now over.

Always influenced from eastern and generally exotic sounds, this time around sees dEbruit looking for inspiration in the music that surrounded him in the Turkish neighborhood he was residing at in London. The 4 tracks here merge the sounds of authentic Turkish string instruments (wish I could identify them by name..), accordion, other folk instruments and lots of percussion with his unique flavor of tight beats, filthy synths and vocoders with the result sounding as dEbruit as ever.

dEbruit is apparently currently working on his debut LP, this time around sampling the sounds of West Africa, and based on what we’ve heard from him up to now, sounds like it’s most definitely worth waiting for.

Don’t Fake The Funk

Although it’s by far one of my favorite albums lately, I hadn’t written anything about Frite Nite’s label head Salva and his Complex Housing album. But now that Mike Gao’s new LP is out, I think I can try and merge these two into one post.

The beat scene is still very fresh, but it’s no longer so young, it’s borders have basically been set, and it’s time to start messing with them. It hit me when listening to both these talented Californians who in their debut albums are pushing the scene’s limits into the funky outer space. Call it future boogie, or give it any other new made up name, either way I truly enjoy what they’re doing. Finding it really hard to put these guys’ sound into a box - Dirty synths and fat basslines, somewhat wonky beats, a vocalist here and there and more than a dash of experimentalism make these two albums sound different from each other and more diverse with each track, yet somehow maintaining a very specific feel. Guess I need to move to Cali to get the full picture.

Anyways - more proof of the common ground these two producers share comes with them both collaborating with Zackey Force Funk and his distinct vocals. Check it:

BTW - Sun Shadows’ album cover was done by yet another LA Beatmaker, Teebs. Just so you know.

Great Minds Beat Alike

I like it when two different producers sample the same song. This time it’s also a good chance to write a bit about B. Lewis and Ambassadeurs who I wanted to post about for a while and didn’t quite get to.

B. Lewis is (yet another) super gifted beatmaker from California, and his latest 30 tracks long (!) release Science Within Reason is one sweet ride through electronic shiny future funky beats. Highly recommended. Grab it here.

Ambassadeurs AKA Mark Dobson, on the other hand, crafts his beats in Brighton, and has less of an electronic tendency, drawn more towards the groove and dubbed out sounds. Check out his soundcloud and bandcamp, and keep an eye out on him as he seems to have quite a lot planned for the near future.

Both these gifted dudes make very musically rich tunes, and it’s interesting to see the different approaches they bring with them when sampling this one (do you recognize it btw? cause I don’t..). Have a listen:

*Edit* - Whaddya know? Yet another one of my current favourite beat producers sampled this tune too.. Check out vect~son’s Oh Miel for yet another angle on this story. Will no one spot the original sample??

Mad-Hop vol.2

Only two months after it’s predecessor was released, Mad-Hop vol. 2 hit the bandcamp shelves two days ago with 21 tasty beats and pieces jam packed inside. Producers from around the world and throughout the post-hop/8bit/whatever spectrum are featured on the compilation and while some of these bea(s)ts go a bit too far for me, those that hit the spot hit it hard and hit it well.

Honorary mentions go to Headshotboyz, Lomovoloko, Daniel Drumz and of course my man Grillo, doin it right as always.

A mere #3.99 and this is all yours.

THE one

Hold on, Let me catch my breath for a sec.

Jon Phonics hasn’t just popped out of nowhere. He’s been around for a few years now, producing beats and collaborating with many MC’s out of the UK hip-hop scene (perhaps you remember his Half Past Calm series?), but it seems to me like 2011 is when it all fell in to place for him, and his beats hit that very sweet spot.

Bruck Out/The One, released 24 May, sees Jon Phonics at his prime, his production sounding extra tight, and with this track, The One, doing it oh-so-f*n-right. You can also find Bruck Out on there, and a couple of remixes by Naive Machine and Lady Daisy, but, all due respect, as far as I’m concerned this could have been a one track only release, hell, it could have been a one track only album.

As you can see I’m pretty well excited about this tune, it’s BIG and may as well be amongst the 3 best new tracks I’ve heard this year. It’s all about the boogie here, the bass is wide and bouncy, there’s all these layers of naughty synths and dubby bleeps going on all around, and the sample is quite perfect too.

It’s just great, okay?

Also been enjoying other beats out lately by the man, such as AM and Mutual Attraction, both released for free download on Bandcamp. Go get ‘em!

MPC Sweatshop

Just last month I wondered out loud on twitter how on earth does Ta-Ku manage to produce so many (great) beats so frequently. One reply I got (by someone I don’t know) suggested he’s got himself a beats sweatshop in the Philipines, with 30 philipino ladies working round the clock in a small room full of MPCs. Funny as that may be, I really cannot find any other explanation. April alone saw the release of two albums by this gifted Australian beat maker - the Day & Night EP and the 24 album via Joe Kay’s Soulection, which, looking at it’s bandcamp page now, I realize had it’s 13 tracks produced in 24 hours (!!!)

As if that was not enough, today Ta-Ku adds 15 more beats to the pile, with his Scraps album release (it’s Free!). These apparently are leftover beats, stuff the dude just had lying around on his HD. You know what they say, one man’s trash is another man’s gold.. These may not be the best beats ever, but damn, most beat makers out there would treat these as their best work.

Big up Ta-Ku! Can’t wait till your next release, somewhere round next week I presume.

Id, Ego, Superego, Finest Ego

After a Japanese, a Russian and the New Zealand/Australian beat compilations, Finest Ego are back at it again, with yet another fine selection of beats, this time putting the spotlight on the UK/Ireland scene.

While these compilations are a very good way to get a good picture of local beat scenes round the world, it’s quite hard to find a different flavour to each location. That’s a good thing though. The beat scene is a global movement, with a few main spots driving it, and this compilation focuses on one of it’s most important main hubs.

Lots of different vibes are about in these 26 tracks, from the groovier more melodic beats to the boogie future funk flavoured ones, through the downtempo mellowed out beats all the way to the very electronic bleeped out kind. I love them all. Finest Ego United Kingdom/Ireland compilation is up for free listening for more than a week already, and should be available for (free?) download soon enough. Meanwhile, here are some of my favourites:

Letherette EP 2

Letherette, one of the hottest beatscrafts out there just released their second EP on Ho_Tep records and boy it’s a good one. Its six tracks span from the mellow groovy spectrum of the beats on Hold Close and Yeah Yeah Love to the energetic 4x4 of No Point and those future funk spaced out vibes of the opening track Bruse. Well worth your money. Cop it in all funky ass record shops on an interwebs near you.

Iron & Cream

Whenever I’m playing somewhere on a beats vibe, and feel like the joint is yearning for a delicious beat bomb to drop, I know I can put my trust in Pixelord. The post hip-hop beats this dude, probably the biggest Russian beat head ever, has been producing, are always bigger than life, bass heavy, flashing and bubbling with 8bit goodness, and always memorable. For me he’s been, from the get go, one of the biggest icons of the beat scene.

But times they are a changing, and Pixelord aka Alexey Devyanin is no man to stand still. The few tracks I got to hear from him lately seemed to point at a drift in his sound, and his new EP seals the deal. Iron & Cream sees Pixelord experimetning with new realms, or perhaps just pushing the limits of his own sound to encompass far greater territories. He seems drawn to that post-dubstep sound, to those lush synths, to the twisted vocals, to the dreamier side of the electronics. All that while, Pixelord retains his signature sound, his basic groove, and of course his top notch production skillz.

As much as I would have loved hearing some new straight up beats from him, I love hearing him evolve, and most importantly, love these new 4 tracks that couldn’t have found a more befitting title than Iron & Cream. Keep it up comrade!

Boombaptist - The Creamixes

I was first Boombaptized sometime last year, when Boombaptist released his Boombaptism beat tape. I ain’t a Christian, but my Boombaptising was a spiritual experience non the less.

Boombaptist (when producing) aka Thesaraus Rex (when rapping) aka Andrew Thaggard (when being human) hailing from Austin, TX, has possibly been my favourite upandcoming beats producer since the very first note I heard from him, and lately it seems he’s starting to draw the attention his beatcrafting skillz desreve.

His brand new EP The Creamixes is a collection of some of his favourite remixes he produced during the last year, seeing him flipping beats and lyrics by Pharoahe Monch, Erykah Badu, D’angelo, M.O.P and more, with his unique melodically rich fat beats and signature bump’d up sound. Being a remix EP, there are way more vocals and rhymes being spat on these beats than we’re used to hear from the Boombapster, but that don’t mean the quality doesn’t stay high throughin and throughout.

It’s a free DL (though you can pay too if you’d like!) that comes complete with a smashing cover art, and you’d better get a move on it and cop these jams before his split 7” with Dibiase drops, featuring his official Guilty Simpson remix, afterwhich you’ll be able to say you were head nodding to his beats way before everyone else.
