Amon Tobin’s Vision

Amon Tobin’s early albums were one of my first and biggest matured musical passions, some many years ago. Together with Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Hexstatic and Roni Size, he ignited my musical imagination and lust for complex electronic sampled beats and grooves. Like the rest of those guys, I kind of lost touch with his music in the years that followed (though I think he might be catching my ears again now - his music seems to have changed quite a lot), but this post is not focusing about that anyways. This post is about the visuals.

And damn, those are some visuals.

I do believe nothing like this has ever been seen before. Nosaj Thing had been pushing the limits for the last two years with his live performances, with projections of multilayered visuals going all around him, and later on on a set of specially crafted cubes that formed his set (watch it). But this takes it a few steps further. I was not lucky enough to watch it (nor does it seem I will be) but ISAM’s live show seems to be a digital masterpiece, with music and visuals perfectly integrated together to form a real stunning and overwhelming experience. Combining the very best of today’s 3D projection technology and a huge cubic structure serving as a screen, with Amon in the middle, this sets the tone and a very high standard for the future of live electronic shows.

Don’t know ‘bout you but I’m blown away.

If you’re anything like me, you’d like to see more of this and learn a bit about the making of this grand spectacle. So here:

Amon Tobin’s ISAM is out now on Ninja Tune.
