Cooly G - Playin’ Me
Took my time with this album. It seems to demand it from its listener. Cooly G has constructed a world entirely of her own, influenced by too many UK origined genres to be mentioned, all blended together, and most importantly, transposed into Cooly G’s realm, a parallel universe of electornics, very near by, yet entirely shifted and obscure.
The overall tone is a bit withdrawn, even when the drum patterns let loose, it all seems to be happening a step backwards from the forestage. While this album is very much a UK Funky/Post Dubstep/Wonky House sort of affair, it very much isn’t, at the same time. Cooly G’s vocals, floating and dubbing around, her slowed down and recloosive attitude binds the whole album together, giving lots of space to get lost at between the notes, plenty of room to dive into the textures.
Basically what I’m saying is:
A. This album is quite fantastic.
B. More women in the electronic music biz, please.
